Who can borrow DVDs from the library?

$

We’ve got two main collections of DVDs in learning centres:

  • Film Studies Collection – these DVDs are on Level 4 of Adsetts and can only be borrowed by students on Film Studies courses.  They are 2 day loan for full-time undergraduates and 1 week loan if you’re part time or a postgraduate.
  • Media collection - films and documentaries that can be borrowed by all SHU students and staff.  These are available as a separate collection on Level 3 of Adsetts and are mixed in with the books at Collegiate.

To find DVDs in Library Search, search for the title you want and click Search.  Next, on the search results page, look under CONTENT TYPE and choose ‘More…’, then click on ‘Video/Video Online’ and you’ll get a list of video items.  Some of these will be available online…

Video Online

Others are available on DVD…

DVDIf you need any help borrowing a DVD or viewing Video Online, just ask at the learning centre Helpdesk.

Books on the move

quiet studyWork has already started to move some books round at Adsetts.

“Why are you doing this?” I hear you ask.

You’ve told us it isn’t always easy to find the items you’re looking for because different copies of the same book are in several places.

This project aims to make the resources that you need available in the same area. For example, the ‘Key Text’ books that were located in the Quiet Study area on Level 4 at Adsetts are being integrated into the main collection.  From now on, when you get to the right subject area on the shelves, you’ll find 1 week loan, 2 day loan and reference copies all in the same place.

While we’re carrying out these changes, we’re using a few of the meeting rooms to booksstore books.  So, if your favourite group room is temporarily closed, please go to the Helpdesk and we’ll find you an alternative place to work.  We’re sorry if this affects you.

What if I can’t find what I’m looking for while you’re doing this?

Again, please visit the Helpdesk or ask any member of staff in the learning centres, and there are signs to help you as well.

Keep up to date with the project by following @shu_library on Twitter.

Those of you who use Collegiate Learning Centre will know that we’ve had the all-in-one printers for black & white and colour printing there for a while.  Well, it’s the same at Adsetts now and you can do everything on the all-in-one printers.

To print, all you need to do is

  • choose whether you want ‘Colour’ or ‘Black and white’ printing in the Print menu of whichever program you’re using, and click Print
  • use your SHUcard to log in to any of the all-in-one printers - they’re on every level of the learning centres
  • release the print job and your work will print out

We’ll be putting two new all-in-one printers in Adsetts cafe as well, so there’ll be more places to print than ever.

For more detailed instructions on how to print, have a look on shuspace or ask at the learning centre Helpdesk.

Self-service laptops

From this week, all library laptops are self service, so you don’t need to ask at the
helpdesk.

Laptops are available 24/7 from the self-service cabinets in both learning centres. You don’t need to issue them, simply pick one up and use it anywhere in the building.

laptops

Please be aware these laptops cannot be taken out of the learning centre and all have location tracking software installed.

The laptops act just like a student desktop PC, including access to the standard software and printing facilities.

Power cables should be available with the laptops, but please ask at Reception for replacements.

Once you’ve finished with a laptop, just return it and the power lead to the cabinets.

We’re always interested in your thoughts about our services, so please give us any feedback that you have.

Don’t forget your SHUcard!

From Monday 1 September, you’ll need to swipe your SHUcard to open the entry gates at Adsetts and Collegiate learning centres.

They won’t just open automatically when you walk up to them any more.

So please remember to bring your SHUcard with you.  This applies to everyone!SHUcard

You should really carry your SHUcard with you at all times as it is also important during overnight and off-peak hours, when non SHU students and visitors are asked to leave the building. Your SHUcard is your only acceptable proof of ID.

You can also use your SHUcard to log in to the all-in-one printers and the self-service issue machines.

If you’ve lost your SHUcard, go to the SHUcard office at either campus to get a new one. At City Campus that’s Owen Building, Level 5.  At Collegiate go to Heart of the Campus.
