  2. Top up machinesUse the top-up machines.  We’ve got print top-up machines in both learning centres.  They’re on both floors at Collegiate and on Level 4 opposite the Helpdesk in Adsetts.  You’ll need exact money in coins for the amount you want to top up.
  3. Go to the Helpdesk.  Staff at the learning centre Helpdesks can top up your Papercut account for you.  Pay by card or cash.

New entry system for learning centres

$
0
0

From next Monday 9th December, you will need to swipe your SHUcard to open the gates at the Adsetts and Collegiate learning centres.access5

Why?

  • Increased security
We want to provide safe and secure learning spaces for students. Other city centre universities have reported as much as a 90% reduction in petty thefts after implementing an access management system
  • Better learning centre services
With a better understanding of who uses our buildings and what our peak times are, we can improve the services we provide for you.
  • More services
We’re working with colleagues across the University to provide more services for SHUcard holders.

How does it work?

It’s really simple.

Carry your SHUcard

You should really carry your SHUcard with you at all times.

You’ll need it to get into the learning centres and it is also important during overnight and off-peak hours, when non SHU students and visitors are asked to leave the building. Your SHUcard is your only acceptable proof of ID.

What if I forget my SHUcard?

Don’t panic!  If you forget your SHUcard, you’ll be asked to provide some ID and fill in a form.

What if my SHUcard is lost or stolen?

Report it immediately to Main Reception, Level 5, Owen Building, City Campus

Imagine there was a journal article we don’t have but you really wanted to read – so you request it from the Document Supply Service.

Sometimes we may need to get back to you with another question so remember to check your emails if you’ve made a request.

You’ve told us that some of our ‘standard response’ letters are difficult to understand. So here’s a chance to help us out, take a look at ‘which response would you prefer to receive?’ and let us know what you think – or send us your own version!

dss 2.jpg

We recommend… opening and printing your electronic document as soon as it’s emailed to you.

Due to copyright, electronic articles can’t be ‘saved’ and will expire after 30 days if not opened.

If you have any problems opening the article then let us know if there is anything we can do to help you. We’re keen to ensure you can make full use of articles we obtain.

How to…find past dissertations

$
0
0

You might be starting work on your own dissertation and want to look through some examples from your own subject area.  Maybe your lecturer has suggested it’d be a good idea to see how other people’s dissertations are structured.  Here’s how to find them.

Go to the Library Gateway and type the subject area you want into the Library Search box, e.g. ‘history’.  On the search results page, look at the left-hand side and you’ll see CONTENT TYPE.  Click on More… for more options and then on Dissertation.

Dissertation

The search results shown in the right-hand pane will now be dissertations relating to the search words you’ve used.  Some of them may be available in print at Adsetts and Collegiate Learning Centres.  These are reference only, so you’ll need to read them in the learning centre.

Dissertation print

Some dissertations are available electronically.  Just click on ‘Full Text Online’ and enter your University username and password to read them.

dissertation-electronic

If none of the search results look very useful, try again with some other key words.  You can do this by thinking of different ways of saying the same thing.  For example, if you’ve searched for ‘maths education’ and haven’t found any relevant dissertations, you could try looking for ‘primary mathematics’ instead.

If you get stuck and need some advice, just ask at one of the learning centre Helpdesks.

From Monday 3rd March a printing pilot will be running in Collegiate learning centre.printing pilot info for CL

Black and white printers will be replaced by ‘all-in-one printers’ (these are the current colour copiers) on both floors.

You’ll be able to use new SHU cards to log in to the ‘all-in-one printers’. There’ll be screen casts and staff on hand by the printers to help you get started. If you’re a returning student or have an old style blue SHU card you’ll need to get it updated. This is free and can be done at 36 College House, Collegiate or level 5, Owen building, City campus.

The differences will be…

  • you can login to ‘all-in-one printers’ more quickly with your SHU card
  • you’ll be able to collect your printing from any ‘all-in-one printer’, so if one is busy or faulty you can go straight to another one
  • it ensures no one else can pick up your printing by mistake
  • more printing options ie A3 black and white
  • no change to cost

All PCs will have a short cut (icon) on the desktop showing you how to print from where you are.

IT rooms on the lower ground floor of Collegiate will retain black and white printers.

So remember to bring your SHU card or get yours updated!

USB flash drive

We get dozens of USB flash drives left in the learning centres every week.  If you lose yours

  • First, check the place where you think you left it
  • Next, ask at the learning centre Reception desk, where lost property is kept – we’ve got a program that lets us find out who a USB stick belongs to and we’ll email you if we know it’s yours
  • Finally, try University lost property (Level 5 of the Owen Building at City Campus and College House at Collegiate Campus

Please don’t keep your only copy of a piece of work on your USB stick!  There’s no guarantee that the person who finds it will do the honest thing and hand it in at Reception.  To prevent your work getting lost, make sure you save a copy to your University HomeDrive.  It’s a good idea to back up your work as well using cloud storage tools, such as Google Drive and Dropbox.  These can be accessed from anywhere you’ve got an internet connection and they work on mobile devices as well.

As always, if you’re not sure what to do, just ask at one of the learning centre Helpdesks, email learning.centre@shu.ac.uk find us on Twitter @shu_library, or phone 0114 225 3333 (option 3).

If you’ve booked a meeting room or a group booth in learning centres, make sure you arrive and log into the PC soon after your booking starts.  You have 15 minutes from the start time to log in, or the booking will be cancelled and other people will be able to book instead.  So, if your booking begins at 1pm, you need to log in by 1.15.

Getting your work bound

$
0
0

If you’ve been asked to get a piece of work bound before you submit it, there are two ways you can get it done.

In learning centres

Go to one of the learning centre Helpdesks and buy a binding comb and plastic covers.  Plastic covers cost 5p each.  Binding combs are available in three different sizes:

  • Small can hold up to 20 pages and costs 15p
  • Medium fits as many as 80 pages and costs 20p
  • Large can accommodate up to 150 pages and costs 25pBinding combs

So, if you wanted to buy binding materials for a 15 page essay, it’d cost you 15p for a small binding comb, 5p for your front cover and 5p for your back cover – 25p in total.

We have binding machines next to the Helpdesks that you can use to punch holes in your paper and then attach the binding comb and plastic covers.  We can show you how they work but then you’ll need to do it yourself.

At University Print Services

If you’d rather get the binding done for you, go down to Print Services on Level 1 of the Adsetts Centre.  They can bind dissertations and also other pieces of work.  Have a look at the Print Services binding webpage to find out more.

$
0
0

BnHH9QSIAAAPSLt (1)You might have seen them already in the learning centres; we’ve got student ambassadors in blue t-shirts whose job it is to find you a free PC.

They’re at Adsetts and Collegiate during the busiest times of day (11am – 3pm).  Just let them know what sort of PC you’re looking for (e.g. standard PC, meeting room, etc) and they’ll use the PC booking system to try and find you one.

Has one of the ambassadors helped you find a PC already?  Let us know what you thought – Have Your Say

Remember as well – you can save yourself time and increase your chances of getting the type of PC you want by booking in advance:

  • Log in to shuspace
  • Go to the Learning Essentials tab
  • Click on Book a PC or a meeting room (under the IT and Learning Centre Services heading in the bottom, right-hand corner)
  • A new window will open: ‘How do I book a PC or meeting room?’  Click on the link next to ‘Advance booking’
  • Use the booking system to choose which building you want to work in, which level, and which type of PC

That way, you can come into the learning centres and know there’ll be a PC ready for you.
